Week of 11/2 - 11/6
Happy November students and families! I cannot believe that we are already this far into the semester! I want to take a moment to thank all of you for sharing your children with me. They have made my first year at Jenks incredible. I couldn't ask for more thoughtful, caring, and positive students. With every passing week, I see more growth in your children in both academics and character. It has always been my goal as a teacher to guide students to be compassionate, caring, and passionate citizens and gain applicable knowledge along the way.
This month we are collecting canned goods and other items for JEI's annual Canned Food Drive. Please consider adding things like canned food and cereals to your grocery list this week and next for your child to bring to school and donate to those in our community.
Monday
Math - Unit 2.5 Multiplying decimals, Math Journal page 60 with a buddy.
Science - "Understanding Density" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlkpZZW29b0 Glue Inquiry 2.2 charts into journals and discuss what the approximate densities should have been calculated as and make appropriate corrections.
Tuesday
Math - Unit 2.5 Multiplying with decimals. Here's a great link that goes step by step in multiplying with decimals: Study Jams Multiplying with Decimals
Then we learned how to play Multiplication Bulls-eye which strengthens multiplication skills and estimation.
Science - Inquiry 2.3 Finding the density of irregular objects. As a class, we found the density of a copper cylinder, galvanized screw, and nylon stopper by measuring it's mass on the triple beam balance and volume by water displacement and dividing the two measurements together. Density = mass/volume
Wednesday
Math - Unit 2.5 Multiplying with decimals. Stations day! Today was a big routine and procedures day for our first run with rotations. With more practice of the routine and procedures we will be able to get more accomplished in our rotations. Today's rotation stations included 1) Multiplcation Bulls-eye game 2) multiplication estimation word problems 3) Menu Math: Ice Cream Parlor multiplication with decimals 4) review station multiplying with powers of 10. Tomorrow we will finish the remaining two stations.
Science - Who is Archimedes? We read an article in our textbook about Archimedes and his contributions to math and science by discovering water displacement and watched a corresponding video. Extension: discussion on which Archimedes tale is true. Crown or Boat?
Thursday
Math - Finishing stations and completing exit slip independently.
Science - Mass and Weight Article, Lesson 2 Exit Slip.
Friday
Math - Open Response Problem (Independently), If time, practice and review of dividing whole numbers.
Science - Begin Inquiry 3.1 "Building a Density Column" by setting up journals and making predictions of what will sink or float.
Thank you so much families for donating items to our canned food drive! Food drive ends next week, so keep bringing items!
Book Fair ends today at 3:30 pm. It has been a great success, the kids have gotten some great books and fun items this year!
